When it comes to keeping your drains and toilets working smoothly, you’re your own best friend. Or – dare we even say it? – worst enemy.
The thing is, most clogged drain issues can be prevented. It takes a little effort and focus, and yet most people who practice the fine art of clogged drain prevention find it’s well worth their time.
How to Prevent a Clogged Drain
- Keep coffee grounds, food chunks, and grease out of kitchen drains.
- Put food scraps in the trash or compost heap, not the garbage disposal.
- Pour liquid grease into a sealable container and add it to your trash bin.
- Keep hair and soap scum out of bathroom drains by covering them with a drain screen or hair catcher.
- Brush your hair before you shower or take a bath to remove loose hair that can clog your drain.
- Pour a kettle of hot water down your kitchen sink once a week to melt away fat or grease that worked their way inside your pipes. Pour the water slowly to avoid getting scalded.
- Once a month or so, pour the recommended amount of an organic drain cleaning liquid into the drain.
How to Prevent a Clogged Toilet
- Know what you can flush – Toilets were made to flush only waste matter and toilet paper. Not toys, jewelry, cigarette butts, or so-called flushable wipes. Sure, you can flush them, but that doesn’t mean they dissolve!
- Easy on the toilet paper – When you attempt to flush a big ball of toilet paper all at once, only the outer portion dissolves. It’s better to use an extra flush.
- Address problems early on – If your toilet is draining slowly, chances are there’s a clog brewing down the drain line. Plunge it now…don’t wait until it gets worse.
