When functioning properly, a water heater is typically kept out of sight and out of mind. In fact, it’s not until you’re left with cold water for your morning shower that you even begin to suspect something may be wrong. Yet, a water heater often provides warning signs that it needs attention long before it stops delivering hot water.
If you notice unusual noises coming from your water heater, don’t ignore them. By identifying the type of noise it’s making, you can get an idea of what it means and whether it is cause for concern.
Here are 5 common water heater noises, their potential causes, and what you should do about them.
1. Popping or Rumbling
A popping or rumbling noise coming from a heater is likely due to sediment buildup, a normal occurrence especially if you live in an area with hard water. Steam bubbles can form under the sediment and burst through as the water heats up, creating the popping sound. You can try a descaling product or flush and drain the tank to remove the sediment.
2. Whistling
A whistling or high-pitched sound is usually caused by water under pressure that’s being forced through a small opening. This can be due to a valve that is not fully opened. Listen carefully to determine the location and if the valve is close to the water heater, contact a professional plumber to replace the valve.
3. Hissing
A hissing noise is typically associated with electric water heaters. The hissing sound is usually a result of the lower heating elements being covered by sediment. Flushing and draining the heater can help remove the sediment and put an end to the hissing.
4. Humming
A water heater making a humming noise is often caused by a loose heating element making the water around it vibrate. Tightening the element or connection should help.
5. Water Running
If you hear the sound of running water, it could simply be water entering the storage tank. It should stop once the tank has refilled; if the sound continues, it could indicate a leak or a broken pipe. Contact a plumber for assistance.
