Breathe in the purity of Clean Air Month.

Once again, it’s May, when Clean Air Month is observed.

While it’s common to think of outdoor air pollution when the topic comes up, the truth is otherwise.  In fact, and on average, indoor air is 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. When you also consider that we spend about 90% of our time indoors, we all have reason to be concerned.

Certain air pollutants – indoors and out – have been linked to cancer, respiratory illnesses, developmental delays, and many other serious health conditions. Air pollution also has a negative effect on our delicate eco-system, disrupting vegetation, lakes, rivers, and oceans along with the creatures that inhabit them.

So, what can you do to reduce air pollution and improve the quality of life for everyone (and everything) who depends on clean, healthy air?  Here are just a few suggestions:

  • Choose a propane grill over charcoal.
  • Consider converting your wood-burning fireplace to gas.
  • Buy locally produced and sustainable food and goods.
  • Use less electricity by unplugging electronics and buying energy efficient appliances.
  • Operate your dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer only when full.
  • Use a broom instead of a leaf blower.
  • Use an electric or push mower instead of gas-powered.
  • Drive less and walk, bike, or carpool more often. If given the option, consider working from home once a week.
  • Keep your car tuned-up, check your tire pressure routinely, and don’t let your car idle any longer than necessary.
  • Wash clothes by hand versus dry-cleaning, and line-dry them instead of running the dryer.
  • Maintain proper humidity levels to prevent a build-up of mold and mildew.

How’s the quality of your indoor air?  If you or other family members are plagued by constant symptoms of cold and allergies, low-quality indoor air might be the reason why.  Contact Anthony’s Plumbing, Heating & Air today to learn more about our indoor air quality services and how we can help add comfort and relief to your everyday life.
